Examples

This page shows some common building jobs that the calculator can be used for.

1 Example One

Domestic dwelling with an allowance for non load bearing timber stud partitions on top of floor joists.

This is a typical example of a removal of a load bearing wall at ground floor level, a steel beam is required to support the first floor joists and non load bearing timber stud partitions above the proposed opening in the wall.

steel beam calculations for steel beam supporting timber floor joists

A single UDL (Uniform Distributed Load) was entered into the calculator with two loadings:

First Loading: 'Timber floor (domestic dwelling)'

Variable: 1.5kN/m2, Permanent: 0.6kN/m2

Second Loading: 'Lightweight timber stud partitions, on floor plan'

Variable: 0.25kN/m2, Permanent: 0kN/m2

A steel beam (178 x 102 x 19 UB S275) 3m long was selected.

The calculator produced a report suitable for building regulation approval which shows the bending, shear and deflection for the beam are all within safe limits.

2 Example Two

This is a typical example of a removal of a load bearing wall at ground floor level, a steel beam is required to support the ceiling joists, non load bearing timber stud partitions, first floor joists and brick wall above the proposed opening in the wall.

steel beam calculations for steel supporting internal load bearing wall

A single UDL (Uniform Distributed Load) was entered into the calculator with four loads:

Load 1: 'Ceiling beneath sloping roof'

Variable: 0.25kN/m2 Permanent: 0.3kN/m2 Width of load perpendicular to beam, or height of load supported by beam: 3.5m

Load 2: '102.5mm Brickwork + Plaster or render on BOTH sides'

Variable: 0kN/m2, Permanent: 2.45kN/m2 Width of load perpendicular to beam, or height of load supported by beam: 2.8m

Load 3: 'Lightweight timber stud partitions, on floor plan'

Variable: 0.25kN/m2, Permanent: 0kN/m2 Width of load perpendicular to beam, or height of load supported by beam: 3.5m

Load 4: 'Timber floor (domestic dwelling)'

Variable: 1.5kN/m2, Permanent: 0.6kN/m2 Width of load perpendicular to beam, or height of load supported by beam: 3.5m

A steel beam (178 x 102 x 19 UB S275) 3m long was selected.

The calculator produced a report suitable for building regulation approval which shows the bending, shear and deflection for the beam are all within safe limits.

3 Example Three

steel beam calculations for steel beams supporting external cavity wall

The calculator produced reports shows the bending, shear and deflection for the beam are all within safe limits for both beams.

4 Example Four (Steel Ridge Beam)
